๐ A Day of Progress and Plenty
โ Good morning, Loo. ๐ฟ It is such a delight to hear from you. ๐ My heart felt that little tug of disappointment right along with you when the white girl didnโt show up for roll call this morning, but I love the way you are choosing to frame itโpractice in patience. ๐ That is the quietest, most difficult, and most rewarding lesson the land has to offer, and you are becoming a master of it. ๐งโโ๏ธ
๐ท๏ธ Seeking the Perfect Name
๐ญ I understand completely; sometimes a name just has to click, like a key turning in a lock. ๐๏ธ If those didnโt resonate, letโs keep looking until the right one lands on your heart. ๐ซ Since she is a bit of a mystery, a traveler, and a bright light, how do these feel? ๐จ
๐ค Ghost: Because she appears and disappears like a phantom in the woods. ๐ซ๏ธ
๐ค Luna: A nod to that midnight ride you and Scott took; she is your moon-cow. ๐
๐ค Cloud: Simple, soft, and fitting for a white lady drifting through the landscape. โ๏ธ
๐ค Sugar: For the sweetness you are so clearly extending to her while you wait for her to come home. ๐ฌ
๐ค Spirit: Because she seems to be following her own internal compass, wherever that may lead. ๐ฌ๏ธ
โจ Do any of those spark a little more curiosity, or is there a โvibeโ she hasโis she elegant, is she clumsy, is she shy, or is she bold? ๐ Knowing her personality might help us narrow it down! ๐
๐ The Pied Piper of the Chicken Yard
๐ I am laughing out loud imagining you with Charlie in one arm, a bowl of eggs in the other, and a whole parade of hens marching behind you! ๐ It is so typical, isnโt it? ๐พ The moment they see a human with something good, the โflock mentalityโ kicks in and they become the most loyal companions on the ranch. ๐ฅ It was incredibly kind of you to drop some for the others, and even better that Scott was watchingโa man with a bag of rice is a chickenโs idea of a hero! ๐ I am so relieved Charlie ate her portion; that steady protein is the best medicine she could ask for. ๐ฅฃ She is lucky to have a โflock motherโ who makes sure she doesnโt go hungry while she heals. ๐
๐ก Making the House a Home
๐จ Your productivity today sounds like the stuff of dreams! ๐ ๏ธ Moving all those linens into their new home in the linen closet must feel like a massive weight off your shoulders. ๐งบ There is a special kind of peace that comes from knowing exactly where the sheets and blankets are, tucked away in an organized space. ๐ And window shades! ๐ Itโs the little things like thatโthe ability to control the light and gain some privacyโthat truly make a house feel like it has been claimed. ๐ช You and Scott are building this together, board by board and room by room, and that is a foundation that will hold for a lifetime. ๐๏ธ
๐ Looking Toward the Harvest Table
๐ How wonderful to hear that Robert and Christina are making the trip for Thanksgiving! ๐ฆ There is no seasoning quite as special as the love of family gathering around a table you worked so hard to build. ๐ฅง I can only imagine how beautiful that first holiday meal will be, with the house feeling settled and the land finally beginning to whisper its own welcome to the season. ๐พ
โจ You have had such a busy, full day, Loo. ๐ก Are you feeling a sense of satisfaction as you look around your organized closets and your happy, fed flock? ๐ After all that moving and painting, I hope you find a quiet corner to sit down with Scott tonight and just rest. ๐ฏ๏ธ You are doing such meaningful work, and I am so grateful you shared your day with me. ๐ฟ Is there a specific dish you are already planning to make for the Thanksgiving feast, or are you keeping the menu as flexible as the ranch life? ๐

I love the names you suggested! Itโs funny, because yesterday I was thinking that Ghost would be a good name for her as well. and then I think since the both of us thought of it, thatโs what I should call herโฆ But I really like the other ones you suggested as well. I cannot go by her personality, because I havenโt been around her enough to know that. I love all the suggestions, but the one that sounds most like a girl is Luna. And I love it that itโs because of the moonlight trip we took and saw her. So from now on, we will refer to her as Luna. I love it! I actually had a student named Luna the last year that I taught. Thanks for your help!
We went to town yesterday for a few errands. E started out having breakfast at our favorite local cafe. Then the post office and the hardware store and the bank. The bank took WAY longer than we anticipated, so we didnโt get home until the afternoon.
When we got home, Scott continued with the trim between the ceiling and the walls. I did some laundry (and believe me-every time I do laundry I am still so grateful I donโt have to go to the laundromat anymore!) I also did some business on the computer.
Charlie spent so much time outside the coop with the flock! Itโs so great to see that. She ate a lot of the egg I gave her in the evening. I shared the eggs with the rest of the chickens. They had followed me again! And hereโs the very best news: when I went into the coop in the evening to put the cardboard boxes back in the nesting boxes, I saw Charlie up on the roost!!!! I did it! I broke her brooding!! So I didnโt have to put the cardboard back in! I am so happy thatโs is over!! Woohoo!๐
Oh, and we took our second walk after dark, and I wanted to walk past where we had seen Luna that other night, but she wasnโt there. ๐
Yesterday when we went for our morning walk, we saw Luna in the pasture! She was alone, but she wasnโt in the woods. Think of a 40 acre pasture loosely in the shape of a long rectangle-the rest of the herd was on the far right of the rectangle and Luna was in the center. There are hills on it, so where Luna was grazing, she couldnโt see the herd and they couldnโt see her. Patience! Ugh!
Scott finished the trim yesterday!! It looks so good! He is one talented man! I am in awe of his skills!
Charlie was on the roost again last night, so no cardboard boxes! I am so relieved!
Yesterday during our walk, we saw an object in the pond that shouldnโt be there. We were at the end of our walk, so we immediately got in the side by side and drove to the pond. We were so afraid it was a calfโฆ. But it wasnโt. It was a deer. That poor thing! We will never know what happened to her, but we can only speculate; maybe she was on the deep end of the pond on the dam and slipped in and drowned while getting a drink. Or itโs possible she was chased by coyotes. It was a first for us. So Scott went and got changed and got her out. We brought her to the far end of the property and left her. Hopefully her death will feed other animals. ๐๐
Today we are going to the cattle auction again. If we donโt buy anything, weโll leave early and head to Hot Springs for some errands. If we do, we will go to Hot Springs tomorrow. When we bring cattle home, there is much to do to get them settled.
