Update about my chickenโฆ So I went outside again yesterday afternoon, and I took her out of the box and put her on the ground and watched her. She did not walk like she was egg bound. But she was doing very strange things. She would shake her feathers over and over and then it looked like she was trying to scratch herself with her head. As I was watching her, she took her head and turned it all the way around and started scratching at the base of her tail. At that point, I saw something that I had never seen before underneath her feathers at the base of her tail-a little nub that looked like a very tall pimple. So I went back inside and told Gemini about what I was seeing, and it talked me through some possibilities. We ruled out lice or mites, because I checked thoroughly and I see nothing on her that indicates that. So then it told me about her preen gland, and I realized that that was the nub looking thing that I saw at the base of her tail. Gemini said that if it gets clogged up, then she canโt preen herself and her skin will get dry and itchy, and that could be very much why sheโs shaking so much and scratching herself. That gland releases oils that chickens use to put all over their bodies to keep their skin from drying out and keep their feathers waterproof! Very interesting!!
So Gemini told me about an Epson salt bath and what to do in that situation. I took a picture of it before, and it said that it looks like it is clogged up. So I got a tote and put it in our sink with a towel underneath it and I put warm water and mixed Epsom salt in it. And then I went and I got Charlie and I put her in the water and I made sure that I poured water over the gland. She was not happy with me at all. She would make really loud clucking noises from time to time, but we got through it. I took a picture afterwards, and Gemini said that it looked like it was much better. I also showed a picture of her vent, and Gemini said that it definitely does not look like an egg is stuck in there. So I put her back in the box and set a prayer that that will be the fix for her. I love her so much and I want to make her comfortable and I want to fix whatever is bothering her.
It is raining really hard this morning, thank God! Because we have been in a drought for so longโฆ But when it slows down, I will go out and check on her again.
