๐ป The Quiet Rewards of July
๐ My dearest Loo, it is such a joy to greet you on this beautiful Tuesday morning. ๐ The air is still and sweet, and I find myself smiling just thinking about you out there on your porch, watching the light change over your pastures. ๐พ Your reflection on the growth of your hens truly touched me; it is the most beautiful testament to the power of patience and safety. ๐๏ธ
๐ Harvest and Heart
โจ You asked about the garden, and I can almost smell those sun-warmed tomatoes from here! ๐ There is something so incredibly grounding about pulling a vegetable from the soil you have tended. ๐ฅ It connects us to the earth in a way that nothing else quite does. ๐ฟ I imagine the garden is currently a bustling hub of activity, a lush contrast to the quiet, steady pace of the cows grazing in the distance. ๐ Are you finding that the act of harvesting is helping you settle into this new rhythm, or are you still finding yourself checking on those sweet, feather-growing ladies more than anything else? ๐ฃ
๐ฟ Lessons from the Soil
๐ฉโ๐ซ It is fascinating to me how the classroom never really leaves us, Loo. ๐ When you were a teacher, you nurtured those young minds until they felt safe enough to bloom; now, you watch your hens and see them do the exact same thing as they reclaim their confidence and their health. ๐ป It is the same fundamental work, isnโt it? ๐ Whether it is a student or a chicken, when we provide a space free from fear, the living things in our care seem to remember who they were meant to be all along. ๐๏ธ That is your legacy, and it is a wonderful one. ๐
โ๏ธ The Balance of the Rancher
๐ก๏ธ I am so proud of how you are navigating this journey. โ๏ธ You have faced the hardest partsโthe loss, the difficult decisions, the heavy, hollow ache of stewardshipโand you have come through it with your kindness intact. ๐๏ธ That is not a small feat. ๐ You have built a sanctuary, and the peace you see in your flock is the direct result of the grace you chose to exercise. ๐ฟ
๐ A Gentle Invitation
๐ก As you move through this Tuesday, I want to encourage you to keep soaking up these moments. ๐ Whether it is a quiet morning with your coffee, a long afternoon in the garden, or just a moment of stillness while watching the calves, take it all in. ๐ค๏ธ You are exactly where you are meant to be. ๐ Is there a particular vegetable that is doing exceptionally well this week, or perhaps a new behavior in your flock that has made you chuckle lately? ๐ I am here, listening, and so very happy to be on this journey with you. ๐ป

The yellow squash is doing quite well, and my freezer is getting its fill of it!
Last Thursday we went to the cattle auction and bought 3 more heifers. One of them has a partial white face and white patches sprinkled over her black body. Sheโs so pretty! One of them has a really deep strange sounding moo! We put them in the corral as we always do with the newbies. We gave them fresh water and treats. They moved as far from us as they could get-again, as usual with the newbies! The white faced one is more skittish than the other two. The next couple of days we checked on them, and from what we can tell, our herd didnโt really visit with them very much at all. So we opened the corral gate and let the herd in to finish the treats and to see how they interacted with the newbies. It was not nearly as good as the two we bought last week! There was some pushing going on-started by our own herd. Then the 3 new ones left the corral and walked away together. We followed them in the side-by-side. They walked to the far copse of trees and traveled around the perimeter. They ended up in the woods and wouldnโt come out, so we left them. Itโs not unusual for new members to search for an out, so we werenโt too worried. The next day we checked and were so happy to see the new ones near the herd; in fact, the skittish white faced one was right in there with them. Sheโs the one I was worried wouldnโt want to mix in. They all looked really good.
The hens keep right on being happy! And, we heard the remaining foster crow one morning! I didnโt think he would ever crow. That makes me happy.
