We still have not done the job with the roosters. Scott has been so busy working on the porch. I know he wants to get that done. I will definitely tell you when itโs done.
Well, you know about the hens that have been brooding. And I think I told you about the eggs that we had to throw away because one of them got Scott really sick due to the eggs being moved back-and-forth by the other chickens. And then I went out there, and I cleaned out all of the nesting boxes thoroughly and threw away the eggs and started fresh. Well, of the three that were brooding really faithfully, two of them stopped on their own. One of them will not stop brooding. There are many ways that you can stop them from brooding, and I tried with the frozen water bottle, but she keeps doing it. So yesterday I decided a different approach. I pulled her, kicking and screaming, out of the nesting box and held her for a while to calm her down. And then I put her in the orchard with several other chickens and closed off the entrance to the coop. She has to be out of the nesting boxes for a certain amount of time before she will be broken of the brooding. I kept her there for the rest of the day. And then I had to figure out a way to close off the nesting boxes for the evening, because she would not leave the box at all. So I got some of our empty moving boxes, measured the nesting box and then measured the moving boxes and cut them in half. I then put the cardboard boxes inside each nesting box at night after I knew the chickens were all done laying eggs, and thatโs how I left it.
I got up first thing this morning and went out there and removed the boxes. Yesterday when I was holding my broody hen, I memorized her so I would know for sure which one she is. I have four French Black Copper Moran hens, and they all look alike to me. The one in question has three distinct points on the front part of her comb, so now I know exactly which one she is.
Anyway, after I removed the boxes, I stood and watched. The Buff Brahma hen almost immediately went inside one of the boxes. I cleaned up and did what I usually do while keeping an eye on what was going on. The broody hen sat on top of the nesting boxes and watched the Buff Brahma. I went outside and did some other stuff and then when I came back in my broody hen had come down onto the platform and was now trying to get inside the box with the Buff Brahma. โNo maโam,โ I said. I again pulled her out, kicking and screaming, held her tightly against my body and calmed her down. I went into the orchard and closed the gate. And then I walked around with her for a little while and fed her some leaves. I then closed off the entrance to the coop and set her down. I made sure she had fresh water and food. Thatโs where she will have to stay all day. I sure hope this works!
After I left her in the orchard, I went back into the coop and saw that the Buff Brahma had indeed laid an egg! I will go check on her often today, and Iโm hoping to get some of the other hens out there with her so sheโs not alone.
One more thingโฆ I now have gathered six dozen eggs since I had to throw away the other six dozen eggs. ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐
