🎯 What We Did
🔤 This pass continued the ongoing effort to eliminate abbreviated names from the Haskell automation codebase. 📖 Each abbreviated symbol is replaced with a full, self-documenting name that needs no mental decoding. 🧹 Ten steps were completed, touching two major areas: the StaticGiscus module and the BlogPosts record type.
🗂️ Steps Completed
🏷️ StaticComment Record Fields
🔑 The StaticComment record in StaticGiscus.hs had two remaining abbreviated field names with the “sc” prefix. First, “scBodyHtml” became “bodyHtml”, and second, “scCreatedAt” became “createdAt”. 📝 After these renames, every field in StaticComment now has a clean, unprefixed name that speaks for itself.
📍 Local Variables in StaticGiscus.hs
🔍 Several local variable names in the StaticGiscus module were also abbreviated. The local binding “idx” in “injectStaticComments” became “insertionPoint”, which clearly describes its role: the character position in the HTML string where static comments are inserted before the Giscus div element.
🔄 The pagination helper in “fetchAllDiscussions” had four abbreviated names. The inner helper’s parameter “mAfter” (which also appeared in the outer “fetchDiscussionPage” function) became “maybeAfterCursor”, reflecting that it holds an optional GraphQL cursor value for page-based pagination. The result binding “mPage” became “maybePage”. The accumulator “acc” became “accumulatedDiscussions”. And the updated accumulator “newAcc” became “updatedDiscussions”. Together, these names make the pagination loop immediately readable: fetch a page with an optional cursor, accumulate discussion nodes, and either recurse with the new end cursor or return the accumulated list.
📦 BlogPost Record Fields
🏷️ The BlogPost record in BlogPosts.hs carried three fields with the “bp” prefix: “bpFilename”, “bpDate”, and “bpTitle”. These became simply “filename”, “date”, and “title”. 🔗 All callers across the codebase were updated: BlogPrompt.hs, ContextQuery.hs, TaskRunners.hs, BlogSeries.hs, and the test file BlogPromptTest.hs.
⚠️ A Naming Collision and Its Resolution
🔦 Renaming “bpFilename” to “filename” exposed an interesting problem in TaskRunners.hs. That module uses the new “filename” field accessor from BlogPost, but it also imports “NavLinkResult” from AiBlogLinks, which had a “filename” field renamed in an earlier pass. With both accessors in scope, GHC reported an ambiguity error.
🩺 The fix was surgical: instead of importing all fields from NavLinkResult with a wildcard “dot-dot” import, the import was changed to explicitly list only the “modified” accessor that TaskRunners.hs actually uses. This removed “filename” from the NavLinkResult import, leaving “filename” unambiguous as the BlogPost accessor.
🧩 A second complication arose from a local variable also named “filename” in the blog post generation code. That local variable (the new post’s filename being written to disk) was renamed to “newPostFilename” to remove the shadowing and make the distinction explicit: “filename post” reads a previous post’s filename from the record, while “newPostFilename” is the freshly composed filename for the post being generated.
📋 Plan Updates
🔍 While completing these ten steps, several newly discovered abbreviations were added to the plan for future passes. The AiFiction.hs module has FictionConfig fields “fcModels” and “fcNoteContent”, and FictionResult fields “frFiction”, “frModel”, and “frUpdatedContent”. Similarly, ReflectionTitle.hs has ReflectionTitleConfig fields with “rtc” prefixes and ReflectionTitleResult fields with “rtr” prefixes. These join the existing backlog of “fmLines”, “updatedFm”, and “bpBody” renames.
🔁 The inner “go” helper in “fetchAllDiscussions” was also noted for renaming to “paginatedFetch” in a future step, following the earlier precedent of renaming “go” to “visitFiles” in InternalLinking.hs.
🧪 Verification
✅ All 2031 tests passed. The build compiled cleanly under the strict minus-Wall-error-Werror compiler flags that CI enforces. HLint reported zero hints.
