🩹 2026-11-08 | Fixing the Catch-Up Crash 📏

🧑💻 Author’s Note
👋 Hello! In the last post I proposed six changes, R1 to R6, to stop a browser tab from crashing during a long async game. They were approved, except R4b, which was the alternative to R4a. This post covers how they were built, what the tests check, how the crash runs came out, and a new bug that the harsher runs turned up.
✅ In short: the three crash-repro seeds that crashed in under about a minute now all pass, and the version is v0.43.0. The design doc has the details in its new §10.
🔁 Breaking the Loop (R1, R2)
The crash was a feedback loop. A failed save became a chat message containing the value that failed to save, twice. Saving the chat then failed with a bigger value, and so on, until the tab ran out of memory.
- 🚫 R1. About 18
save … >>= logErrorToChatcalls becamesave … >>= reportSaveFailure, andreportSaveFailure = either error pure. A failed save goes to the console, and the debug log records it. It no longer goes into the chat, isn’t broadcast to the other players, and doesn’t replace what you’re typing. - 📋 R2. The
setItemFFI now returns only the browser’s error name and message.saveFailureMessageinsrc/Capability/Storage.pursreports the key, the value’s length and at most 200 characters of the browser’s error:
Error saving to local storage. key: 'room/chaos100/game_state' (52926 chars) error: 'QuotaExceededError: …' Either change alone breaks the loop. With both, an error’s size depends only on its key, and no error ever ends up in saved state.
🗂️ Logging Plays by Name (R4a)
Each play in the chat used to carry the whole game, about 48,000 characters, just so the log line could turn “card 3 in the hand” into “Village”. The new module Domination.Data.Chat looks the names up when the play is logged and keeps only them:
data LoggedPlay
= CreatedGame { playerCount :: Int }
| PlayedCard { card :: String }
| Purchased { card :: String }
| ResolvedChoice { choice :: Choice, cards :: Array String }
| Reacted { reaction :: Maybe Reaction }
| FinishedReacting
logPlay :: Game -> Play -> Maybe LoggedPlay - 🧩
logPlayis pure, andNothingmeans the log doesn’t show that play (ending a phase), as before. - 📡 The wire format didn’t change. A game received from another player still includes the game before the play, so the receiver logs it with the same
logPlay. - 🔄 Old saved chats are converted when the room is opened. They still hold a whole game in every play, so the decoder tries the new format first, falls back to the old
RemoteMessagearray, and converts each entry. Then the chat is saved straight away, which frees the megabytes the old one took. - 📏 In a browser check, the whole chat for a short session was 4,312 characters. Before, one play alone was about 48,000.
📏 One Way In (R3)
take 250 used to run on two of the five paths that add to the chat. Now Chat is a newtype whose constructor isn’t exported, so record and the decoder are the only ways to build one. Both keep the newest entries within 250 entries and 100,000 encoded characters, and cut chat text to 500 characters and senders to 100.
The size limit uses a small generic function:
keepNewestWithin { maxCount, maxChars } size xs = take (min maxCount withinChars) xs
where
withinChars = length $ takeWhile (_ <= maxChars) $ scanl (+) 0 (size <$> xs) scanl gives the running total of sizes, and takeWhile counts how many of the newest entries fit. Each entry’s encoded size is computed once, when it’s added, so record doesn’t re-encode the whole chat.
🪵 Debug Logs That Fit (R5, R6)
- 📐 R5.
debug_logandsync_journalinsrc/DebugLog.jskeep a running character count. They drop their oldest lines while they’re over 200,000 or 400,000 characters, as well as over their old 400 and 1,500 line limits. Before, the worst case was about 2 million characters, nearly 40% of the quota. - ✂️ R6. When writing a buffer to localStorage fails, it drops its older half, adds a
WARN … localStorage is full, dropped the oldest N of M linesline, and tries once more. Before, it silently gave up, and the log ended just before the crash it should have explained.
🧪 Tests
test/Chat.purs adds 13 tests, 7 of them QuickCheck properties:
- 🎲 For any entries, the encoded chat stays within 250 entries and 100,251 characters (the budget plus the commas and brackets).
- 🆕 A chat filled past its limits still keeps the newest entry.
- 📦 A logged play stays under 4,000 characters, whatever the size of the game.
- 🔐 A failed save’s message is at most the key’s length plus 300 characters, and never contains the value.
- 🧮
keepNewestWithinkeeps the longest leading run within both limits; text is cut to its limits; a chat survives encoding and decoding. - 📝 Examples:
logPlaynames the card played, the card bought and the cards a choice moved (???for a missing one), and an old-format chat converts with plays named.
🧨 To check that the tests can actually fail, I broke the size limit on purpose. The property test caught it. The full suite passes, 515 of 515.
💥 The Crash Runs
The same harness that found the crash, e2e/chaos.js --scenario turns:
| Run | Before | Now |
|---|---|---|
| Seeds 41, 7 and 3, 20 turns, 3,500 kB storage filler, 512 MB heap | all crashed in 47–65 s | all pass |
| Seed 42, 120 turns, 3,500 kB filler | crashed (even without filler: 418 s, 4 GB heap) | passes: 1,598 plays, peak heap 54 MB, no save errors |
| Seed 43, 120 turns, no filler | crashed at 141 s | passes |
🐛 What the Harsher Runs Found
I also tried to break it harder. A long 800-step mailbox run passed, and so did two relay-only runs with 4,000 kB of filler. But with storage almost full (4,800 kB of filler, 256 MB heap), 2 of 3 mailbox runs never caught up. No tab crashed. This was a different bug:
- 💾 A device plays. Its game save, about 50 kB, fails on the quota.
- ✅ Its mailbox sync record, about 570 characters, still fits, and says “up to date at revision 9”.
- 🔄 The tab reloads with the older saved game.
- 🤷 It asks the mailbox “anything newer than 9?” The mailbox says no, so the device stays a play behind until someone plays again.
📖 The short error lines from R2 made this easy to read in the journal. Before, each of those lines would have been a multi-megabyte chat message.
⚠️ This can happen to real players too. Nothing ever removes a room’s saved data, and each room keeps about 550 kB of saved games, so about nine rooms fill the 5 MB quota. I filed it with evidence and suggested fixes, without fixing it: a failed game save leaves a device a play behind. The suggestions are to save the sync record as up to date only after the game it confirms is saved, to write game_state before the undo slot, and to free space from old rooms when the quota is full.
🧭 What’s Left
- 🐛 The stale-game bug above.
- 🔬 The rest of the instrumentation issue: storage usage per key and heap size in the bug report, a long-task observer, and a short chaos job in CI.
- 📡 Every game update on the wire still carries the game twice. Fixing that changes the message format, which older clients would misread.
